Toyo Kaneshige
Born in 1896. Died in 1967. In 1910, he studied pottery under his father Umeyo. In 1932, he began using the potter's wheel to create pottery and revived old Bizen tea utensils. In 1939, he formed the Karahine Society with Kawakita Handeishi as the core. He worked hard to establish the Japan Crafts Association together with Arakawa Toyozo and Ishiguro Munemaro. In 1954, he was recognized as a holder of the Okayama Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property "Bizen ware". In 1956, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) "Bizen ware". In 1960, he was awarded the Sanyo Shimbun Culture Award and the Okayama Prefecture Culture Award. In 1966, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal.
