Born in 1936 in Shimane Prefecture.
He began his ceramic training in Kyoto at the age of 18, studying under Ishiguro Munemaro and Shimizu Uichi, both holders of the Important Intangible Cultural Property. In 1965, he opened a kiln in Setagaya, Tokyo.
He has received awards including the Chairman's Award at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and the Navy Blue Ribbon Medal.
In 2005, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for his iron-glazed pottery techniques.
