Shoji Hamada
Born in 1894. Died in 1978. Originally from Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo Technical School and Kyoto Ceramic Experiment Station, he went to England and opened the first climbing kiln in the West together with Leach. Promoted the folk craft movement. Served as director of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum and president of the Japan Folk Crafts Association. In 1955, he was named a Living National Treasure. In 1964, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal. In 1968, he was awarded the Order of Culture. Listed in the Art Yearbook. Awarded 8 million yen.
