Born in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture in 1935, Kato Kozo initially aspired to be a painter, but after receiving instruction from Kato Kobei V at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Testing Center, he decided to pursue pottery. His encounter with Living National Treasure Arakawa Toyozo deepened his passion for pottery, and in the 1960s he built an anagama kiln and a climbing kiln in Hirashibatani, Kani City, and began working to revive Mino-Momoyama pottery.
At the heart of his work are Momoyama-era techniques such as Shino, Setoguro, and Kiseto. Setoguro in particular is characterized by its deep black skin, which is created by removing the vessel from the kiln during firing and rapidly cooling it, giving it a unique strength and tension. For this expression, he was designated a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Setoguro" (Living National Treasure) in 2010.
He has exhibited his works in numerous public exhibitions and competitions, and has received numerous awards, including the highest award at the Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Japan Crafts Association Exhibition, and the Cultural Merit Award. In the 1990s, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property by Gifu Prefecture, and in 2007 he was awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon. He has contributed to the development of the Mino pottery world for many years, and has also worked hard to train the next generation of pottery.
Kato Kozo's works are full of presence, with powerful forms and the natural character of the clay, embodying the world of Momoyama pottery revived in modern times. The jet black of Setoguro and the soft white of Shino leave a deep impression on users, and continue to fascinate many people today.
