Uichi Shimizu
He was born in 1926 to a family that sold Kyoto ware as a wholesaler. In his youth, he studied under Ishiguro Munemaro, who had a great influence on him. After working as an assistant at the Kyoto Ceramic Testing Laboratory and the Ceramics Department of the Kyoto Municipal Technical Research Institute, he began his career as a potter. In 1947, he formed the Shiko-kai with Uno Sango and others. In 1949, he joined the Kyoto Ceramic Art Club. At the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, which opened in 1954, he won a number of awards for his persimmon-glazed and iron-glazed works. In 1962, he won the gold medal at the Prague International Ceramic Art Exhibition, and in 1967, he won the grand prize at the Istanbul International Ceramic Art Exhibition. In 1985, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for "iron-glazed pottery."
