This is a work by Living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi. In 1940, he dropped out of Ritsumeikan Commercial School (later Ritsumeikan High School) to study Chinese ceramics under Ishiguro Munemaro. After serving as an apprentice at the National Kyoto Ceramic Testing Center, he became an assistant in the Ceramics Department of the Kyoto Municipal Technical Research Institute. He then devoted himself to ceramics, mainly in his home studio, and became a world-famous ceramicist. In 1970, he moved his studio to the foot of Mount Horai in Kosai, Shiga Prefecture. On April 13, 1985, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property for "Iron-glazed Pottery" (a so-called Living National Treasure). This is a work from his later years, titled "Horai."
