Collection: Artist Category > The "HA" column (Shoji Hamada, etc.) > Bernard Leach
Born in 1887. Died in 1979. A representative British ceramicist.
He encountered pottery in Japan, and through his interactions with Muneyoshi Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, members of the Mingei Movement, he was fascinated by the fusion of Eastern ceramics and Western aesthetics. In 1920, he returned to England, where he built the first traditional Japanese climbing kiln in the country, and in 1922 opened a kiln called "Leach Pottery."
