Shigetaka Kato was born in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, the third son of Tokuro Kato. After graduating from Seto Ceramic School in Aichi Prefecture in 1945, he studied pottery under his father.
He is a leading figure in the Contemporary Mino Ceramic Art Society and works mainly with Shino, Oribe, Kiseto, and Karatsu tea ceramics, as well as ceramic walls.
