Jiro Kinjo (1912-2004) was a ceramic artist born in Okinawa Prefecture, and in 1985 he became the first person in Okinawa Prefecture to be designated a Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). He began his career as a potter at the age of 13 and was strongly influenced by Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi, who were promoters of the Mingei movement. His works include many everyday items such as vases, tableware, and sake cups, and are particularly characterized by designs featuring fish and shrimp motifs.

Characteristics of fish patterns
The "fish pattern" that appears in Kinjo Jiro's works is popular as an auspicious motif that signifies prosperity of descendants, as fish lay many eggs.
In particular, humorous fish patterns such as the "laughing fish" are considered to be iconic designs in Kinjo's work, adding a warmth to his pieces. Aiming to recreate the traditional Okinawan style of Ryukyu pottery, he used relief carving techniques to incorporate abstract designs of fish and shrimp, creating unique and warm ceramic art.

The appeal of fish-patterned vases
Kinjo Jiro's fish pattern vase is characterized by its solid, thick appearance and powerfully carved fish pattern.
