Without a teacher, he taught himself pottery techniques and began making pottery in Mizuma, Nara Prefecture. His bold and carefree creative style has been highly praised, and he is now one of Japan's leading ceramic artists.
Shiro Tsujimura is a free-spirited artist who also works in painting and calligraphy. His Shino ware works, especially Shino tea bowls, are highly acclaimed and loved by many people.
Shiro Tsujimura's works are powerful and have a calm presence, yet they also have the charm to enhance anything they are paired with. His works are even housed in famous art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Uninterested in fame or honor, he taught himself pottery and began his career selling his work at street stalls.
The natural glazes seen in Tsujimura Shiro's works are mainly bright green, deep blue, or blue-gray.
This occurs when ash falls on the piece during the wood-fired firing process, melting at high temperatures and turning into glass. Because this is a natural occurrence, no two pieces are the same color.
Characteristics of the color of natural glazes
Vivid green: A vibrant color created during the firing process.
Deep blue: Found in areas where glaze has accumulated (glaze pools).
Blue-gray: This color is created by covering a base inspired by Sue ware with glass beads.
This natural glaze emits a bright light that is different from that of antique ceramics, giving the work a unique depth.
