Born in 1902 (Meiji 35), died in 1985 (Showa 60). Originally from Kyoto. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he entered the Kyoto Municipal Ceramic Research Institute's affiliated training center. After graduation, he became an assistant to Kenkichi Tomimoto and received his guidance. From before the war, he exhibited a variety of works at the Teiten and Bunten exhibitions. In 1955 (Showa 30), after joining the Japan Crafts Association, he dedicated himself to the production of underglaze blue porcelain. He served as a permanent director and chairman of the ceramics department of the Japan Crafts Association. In 1956 (Showa 31), he became a professor at Kyoto City University of Arts. In 1965 (Showa 40), he became president of the university. In 1977 (Showa 52), he was designated a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) "Underglaze Blue Porcelain." A masterpiece in which underglaze blue porcelain shines brightly against vibrant gold accents.
