This is a work by Kei Fujiwara, a leading Bizen ware ceramist who established an unshakeable position in the ceramics world. He began pottery at the exceptionally late age of 40 for a ceramist, yet he was recognized as a National Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, second only to Toyo Kaneshige. While studying under Toyo Kaneshige and Rosanjin Kitaoji, he dedicated himself to the revival of old Bizen ware and, through his own unique research, developed simple and magnanimous works that differed from Toyo Kaneshige's powerful and rough style. He also achieved international recognition and was eventually designated a National Living Treasure, solidifying his status.
The charm of this piece should be fully conveyed by carefully examining the photographs, even without extensive explanation. It possesses an exceptionally refined character, with a beautifully balanced form. This work epitomizes the essence of simple and magnanimous Bizen ware.
