Born in Sanjo-dori Shirakawabashi Higashi, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. His real name was Yasujiro. He studied Japanese painting at an art school, then learned craftsmanship from Aoyama Shunko, a master of Awata ware, and pottery techniques from Suwa Sozan I. His potter's name "Shunko" is derived from Aoyama Shunko.

In 1909, he was invited to Imbe, Bizen City, and built a kiln at Futatsuzuka. The very next year, he was commissioned by Okayama Prefecture to produce Bizen ware to be presented to Emperor Meiji. He excelled in craftsmanship, and there are countless examples of his works being presented to emperors and foreign dignitaries, and winning awards at various exhibitions. In 1942, he was recognized as a qualified artist for the preservation of art.
