[Hatano Zenzo] Born in Karatsu, from an early age he was close to the Nakazato Muan family and had close contact with clay, and after training in Karatsu and Imari, he was adopted by the Hagi ware kiln manufacturer Shizukigama and began receiving instruction from the Hagi ware master craftsman Yoshiga Taibi. In the early days of his career, he exhibited and was selected for the Yamaguchi Prefectural Exhibition and the Nitten Exhibition, but in 1977 he was selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition for the first time, and since then he has exhibited mainly at this exhibition, winning the Japan Crafts Association Award in 1981 and being recognized as an Intangible Cultural Property of Yamaguchi Prefecture in 2002. He produces a wide range of products, from tea ware using traditional Hagi ware techniques to vases with a modern feel.
