His father, Hirano Toyama, is a leading figure in colored wood sculpting who was in charge of coloring for Hirakushi Denchu, a master of modern Japanese wood sculpting. He studied in Italy at the age of 20, where he learned Western sculpting techniques before returning to Japan. After returning to Japan, he learned about extreme coloring from his father, Hirano Toyama, and is the only sculptor who continues to carry on the traditional Japanese technique of extreme coloring.
