Influenced by national policies after the country opened up, he produced many large, technically sophisticated works known as high reliefs for overseas markets. Starting with the Philadelphia International Exposition in 1876, he exhibited his works at many international expositions overseas until the latter half of the Meiji period, winning numerous awards.
Around 1880, he began to produce copies of Chinese Qing Dynasty ceramics using new glazes and underglaze paint, and the range of his works expanded.
In 1896, he was appointed as an Imperial Household Artist, the second person in the ceramics world to be appointed such a position.
