Shigetaka Kato was born in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, as the third son of Tokuro Kato. After graduating from Seto Ceramics School in Aichi Prefecture in 1945 (Showa 20), he studied pottery making under his father.
He is a leading figure in the Contemporary Mino Ceramic Art Association, and works mainly on Shino, Oribe, Kiseto, and Karatsu tea ceremony ceramics, as well as ceramic murals.
