Living National Treasure
Influenced by William Morris and Bernard Leach, he began pottery.
In 1915, he built a full-scale kiln in Nara and taught himself a variety of techniques.
While producing pieces influenced by the Joseon Dynasty and folk art pieces, he succeeded in firing white porcelain.
In 1926, he built a kiln in Setagaya and produced mainly white porcelain and blue and white porcelain works. He then began to seriously produce colored porcelain.
In 1935, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1937, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In 1944, he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
After the war ended in 1946, he moved to Kyoto, where he perfected the "gold and silver color" technique, which involves firing gold and silver simultaneously in addition to colored enamel, and established his own unique style of pottery using fern patterns and other designs.
In 1955, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Colored Porcelain" (Living National Treasure).
