Graduating from the Sculpture Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he studied alongside luminaries such as Okakura Tenshin and Takamura Koun, Itaya Hazan made history as one of Japan's greatest ceramic artists. His work "Porcelain Vase with Crystal Glaze and Gold-Purple Design" earned third prize at the Tokyo Industrial Exposition in 1907 (Meiji 40), marking the beginning of a celebrated career crowned by numerous prestigious awards.

Hazan became the first ceramic artist to be appointed as an Imperial Household Artist (Teishitsu Gigei-in), later receiving the Order of Culture—the highest honor in the arts. In 1955 (Showa 30), he declined designation as a Living National Treasure, underscoring his belief in ceramics as a form of fine art rather than traditional craft.

Among his masterpieces are the "Porcelain Vase with Preserved Light and Rare Fruit Design" (Sen-oku Hakuko Kan, Important Cultural Property), "Porcelain Vase with Longevity Design" (Idemitsu Museum of Arts), and "Porcelain Vase with Bird and Fruit Design" (Tsunoi Museum). His contributions profoundly influenced modern ceramic art, earning him an unparalleled legacy.

“Ice-Pattern Porcelain”

“Ice-Pattern Porcelain” refers to a style characterized by a white base covered with a transparent glaze, inspired by studies of ancient Chinese ceramics, particularly the Yingqing ware of the Southern Song Dynasty.

The Role of Rokuro Master Genda Ichimatsu

Hazan’s works are distinguished by intricate thin-relief carvings honed through rigorous training under master sculptor Takamura Koun. His trusted pottery wheel master (rokuro-shi), Genda Ichimatsu, crafted flawlessly balanced forms, elevating Hazan’s creations with unparalleled refinement, grace, and clarity.

A Supreme Incense Burner from Hazan’s Later Years
