Bernard Leach was a unique British potter who contributed to the development of the folk craft movement together with Yanagi Muneyoshi, Tomimoto Kenkichi, and Hamada Shoji, and returned to England in 1920, built a Japanese-style climbing kiln in St. Ives, Cornwall, and established the Leach Workshop in 1922 as his lifelong base. His unique style of work combines Western pottery such as slipware with Eastern ceramic techniques. In 1934, he came to Japan again from England to cooperate with Yanagi Muneyoshi, who was aiming to establish the Japan Folk Crafts Museum.
