Koinuma Michio was born in Tokyo in 1936. As an elementary school student, he was influenced by his teacher, who specialized in archaeology, and helped with an archaeological excavation, an experience that is said to have had a major impact on cultivating his aesthetic sensibilities. He studied at the economics departments of two universities, Osaka University and Waseda University, but he could not forget his experience of excavating ruins, and his desire to become a potter grew stronger, so he dropped out of university and pursued a career as a potter. He built the Ichimoku Kiln in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, and devoted himself to pottery, winning the top prize at the Northern Kanto Art Exhibition. He was then active mainly in exhibitions and solo shows.
