He has inherited the traditional Kakiemon style into the modern era, further evolving the muddy texture established by his predecessor to produce magnificent works with outstanding depictive power and high sense. This work was created by the 14th generation Sakaida Kakiemon himself, a leading figure who has made great achievements, including being designated a Living National Treasure for Arita ware colored porcelain.
The ivy motif, painted on a milky white, opaque base with light, flowing brushstrokes and a clean, unobtrusive color scheme, is a bright and beautiful expression, making it a very popular subject. This exquisite piece features perfectly balanced shapes, vivid, realistic painting, and dense detail, while also featuring beautiful white space.
The works of the Juyondai ware, which carry the 400-year history of Arita, continue to enjoy ever-increasing acclaim and will no doubt continue to attract much attention in the future.
Ivy has beautiful palm-shaped leaves and vine-like stems similar to those of maples, and its charm was so popular that it was depicted in picture scrolls during the Heian period. It was during the Momoyama period that it began to be used as a pattern on clothing. Because ivy grows rapidly by climbing onto other trees and buildings, it is also used as a family crest as it is seen as a strong, auspicious plant.
