Kawai Kanjiro was a Japanese ceramic artist who was born in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture in 1890 and died in 1966 at the age of 76.
Kanjiro Kawai left behind works in a wide range of fields, including not only ceramics but also sculpture, design, calligraphy, poetry, lyrics, and essays. He left behind the words, "Life is work, work is life," and he found beauty and joy in everyday life through his work.
From 1937 (Showa 12, around age 47) to 1938 (Showa 13), he concentrated on producing "Kushime bowls." The works from this period are characterized by glazes typical of folk art and warm shapes, unlike the flashy works of his later years. The designs scraped out by the comb are elegant, combining practicality and artistry.
