Diameter 6.7cm
The sake cups made by Kaneshige Toyo are characterized by their powerful kiln changes and a style that emphasizes the softness of the clay. Some of his works from the early 1950s have a sense of the relaxed feel of potter's wheel, influenced by Kitaoji Rosanjin. Many of his later works have large shapes and swings, and exude a heavy presence.
Ash glaze and iron pattern
The ware is coated with an ash glaze and features iron-painted patterns. Toyo has also used nail carving to decorate tea bowls, water jars, and sake bottles. The ash glaze can produce a light blue color similar to celadon or unique mottled patterns by using straw ash.
University of Hawaii and Kaneshige Toyo
Kaneshige Toyo was invited to teach at the University of Hawaii as a summer lecturer in 1964, and during his stay he held the "Kaneshige Toyo and Domyo Two-Person Exhibition" in Honolulu. It is possible that this work was created during this period, or that it was in the possession of someone associated with the University of Hawaii, and that it has been appraised by Kosuke.
