This work was created by the great potter Sakaida Kakiemon XIII (1906-1982) himself, who, together with his father, the 12th generation, restored the once-decorated "Nigote" style of porcelain ware, boasting unparalleled skill among all Kakiemon generations, and who laid the foundation for the prosperity of modern Kakiemon. It is a work of exceptional quality and elegance. Its appeal lies in the beautiful, moist, milky white base that is unique to Nigote, and the design, which displays the 13th generation's immense creativity, captivates the viewer. The harmony between the traditional base and the design adds color to the modern era... This is an extremely exquisite and elegant piece that truly embodies the 13th generation's beliefs.
The grape and squirrel design is highly auspicious, signifying fertility and prosperity of descendants, and has been a standard Imari design since ancient times.
In addition, members of the samurai class interpreted "grape" as "martial arts" and "squirrel" as "ruling," and used the pun to mean "ruling martial arts."
