Ryuichi Kumakura is the second-generation craftsman at Hanashyo, an Edo Kiriko workshop founded in 1964. In April 2024, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays in the spring conferment of honors, in recognition of his achievements. All Hanashyo pieces are cut and polished by hand in the Kameido workshop, and their technical skill and artistry are highly regarded both in Japan and overseas.

At the 2008 Toyako Summit, wine glasses featuring Hanashyo's original "rice-connecting" pattern were chosen as gifts.

Aside from the patterns, there is another major feature of Hanashyo's Edo Kiriko. That is, all processes are done by hand. The most important of these manual processes is "hand polishing." Most workshops use "acid polishing," which uses sulfuric acid, hydrogen fluoride, etc. for the polishing process, but Hanashyo also performs this polishing process by hand. While acid polishing is a process suited to mass production, the chemicals used are highly toxic and harmful to the global environment, and they also dissolve the cut surface, causing it to lose its precious brilliance. Hanashyo continues to create its products with this pride and dedication, in order to deliver to everyone "authentic" Edo Kiriko, which harmonizes the natural brilliance of the glass with the beauty of the delicate patterns.
