Jiro Kinjo (1912-2004) was a ceramic artist born in Okinawa Prefecture, and in 1985 he became the first person in Okinawa Prefecture to be designated a Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). He began his career as a potter at the age of 13 and was strongly influenced by Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi, who were promoters of the Mingei movement. His works include many everyday items such as vases, tableware, and sake cups, and are particularly characterized by designs featuring fish and shrimp motifs.
Kinjo Jiro's flat vases are characterized by the dynamic depictions of both fish and shrimp on the wide surface of the vessel. The shrimp design in particular has a powerful line engraving, and some of his works are finished with a unique blue glaze.
The appeal of the work
Dynamic depiction of shrimp: Among Jiro Kinjo's works, shrimp are depicted as being particularly full of life.
Rarity: While there are many fish motifs, shrimp motifs are relatively rare and highly sought after.
Inspired by Okinawa's nature: The pieces are inspired by Okinawa's rich nature and sea, and the texture and color of the clay are also carefully selected.
