Shimizu Uichi was a ceramic artist born in Kyoto in 1926 who passed away in 2004 at the age of 77. In 1985 he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for his "iron-glazed pottery."
In 1970, Shimizu Uichi established his pottery studio, "Horai Kiln," at the foot of Mount Horai on the west shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, where he researched new glazes and created the "Horai" series. His works are particular about creating beautiful colored glazes using clay, porcelain clay, and stones collected from the Hira mountain range. The Horai Kakebun Akae Hana Sake Cup is a work filled with Shimizu Uichi's delicate technique and reverence for nature.
