This work was created by the great dyeing artist Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984), who, after meeting Yanagi Soetsu and becoming fascinated by the decorative techniques of Okinawan bingata, began his career as a dyer, focusing on stencil dyeing. With his natural talent for color and pattern, he was able to create a series of fresh and original works that were not bound by the conventional framework of dyeing, and was designated a Living National Treasure.

Serizawa Keisuke visited Okinawa many times and was deeply fascinated by its colors, patterns, and the lifestyle of its people. His works reflect the vibrant nature and rich culture of Okinawa.

Serizawa Keisuke's stencil dyeing is based on the traditional "stencil dyeing" technique, which uses a stencil to apply glue and then dyes the fabric. However, he has added his own unique twists to this traditional technique, creating a modern expression.

The stencil dyeing process

Preparing the stencil: Carve the design into the stencil using a carving knife or similar tool to create the pattern.

Applying glue: The carved stencil is attached to the fabric and then a dye-resistant glue is applied on top. This glue prevents the dye from penetrating.

Dyeing: After the glue has dried, the fabric is colored by dipping it in dye or by brushing it on. The areas where the glue was applied remain white, revealing the pattern.

Desizing and Fixing: The glue is washed off the dyed fabric and the color is fixed.

Characteristics of Serizawa stencil dyeing

Unique designs: His works often feature strong yet warm designs inspired by Okinawan bingata dyeing, folk crafts, and ethnic patterns from around the world.

Rich colors: By layering multiple colors and creating gradients, we have made it possible to express colors with depth.
A fusion of utility and beauty: Beautiful designs are applied to practical items that can be used in everyday life, such as noren curtains, folding screens, and kimonos.
