This work is by Living National Treasure Kato Kozo, who studied under the great master of modern Shino ware, Arakawa Toyozo, and continues to produce masterpieces in traditional Shino, Kiseto, Setoguro, and other styles in a semi-above-ground anagama kiln, deeply exploring the Momoyama and Mino styles.

Among Shino ware, "Nezumi Shino" is made by applying a layer of iron-rich decorative clay under a feldspar glaze, and then scraping off the pattern.

After firing, the areas where the oniita was painted develop a gray or grey color, while the areas where the oniita has been scraped off or where the oniita is thin appear pale red or white. This contrast creates the mysterious beauty that is unique to Nezumi Shino.
