After graduating from Toki Commercial High School, Hayashi Shotaro studied under his brother, the late potter Kotaro Hayashi (1940-1981), and embarked on the study of Mino Momoyama pottery. While cherishing the scarlet and plum blossom skin that are characteristic of Shino ware, he pursues the creation of large-scale works that are considered difficult to create with Shino ware, as well as pictorial expressions based on the natural motifs of Japan's four seasons.

The starting point of his own work is a famous Momoyama period bowl and Important Cultural Property, "Nezumi Shino Tea Bowl, Meiho Autumn Leaves" (owned by the Gotoh Museum of Art), which he saw at an exhibition held in Toki City. Using this Momoyama period Nezumi Shino as his base, he mixes various minerals and studies the combination of firing methods and glazes in order to create the color of Nezumi Shino covered in ashes.

"Shotaro Shino," characterized by its thick glaze and powerful form, and captivating with exquisite colors, is the result of this Shino research. He has made a significant contribution to the elucidation of Momoyama Shino production techniques, Shino firing techniques in gas kilns, and research and development of Shino production techniques for a new era, and in 2002 he was designated a holder of the Gifu Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property "Shino."
This piece displays complex colors, with a thick white glaze on a deep indigo background and some areas showing a faint red hue, and the high base creates a powerful and bold form, making it a work that truly represents the "Shotaro Shino" style.
