The Miwa family has established itself as one of the most prestigious families in the world of Hagi ware, and continues to enjoy immense acclaim and popularity. This is an outstanding work by the 11th generation Miwa Kyusetsu (Jusetsu), the younger brother of the 10th generation Miwa Kyusetsu (Kyuwa), who was designated an intangible cultural asset of Hagi ware. He inherited the Miwa family after his brother retired and was himself designated a Living National Treasure of Hagi ware.
He trained in traditional techniques under his brother Yasukazu, and then studied tea ceremony pottery under Kawakita Handeishi, and is said to have devoted himself to training without a moment's rest for 30 years until he became independent, leaving behind many wonderful works that will be handed down to future generations. This work is a Hagi ware cup with a beautiful, mellow white glaze, and can be said to be the predecessor of Oni Hagi, a pottery that he favored to make in his later years.
The pure white straw ash glaze established by the 11th Kyusetsu is a representative example of Kyusetsu white, and its large, impressive finish is its charm, and the more you use it, the more it will develop a richer character.
