Mishima Karatsu Techniques
Applying patterns
Patterns are applied to the half-dry clay body by pressing inflower patterns like a stamp, or by carving lines or drawing with a comb.
Inlaying white clay
White clay is inlaid into the patterned areas (inlay technique). According to the video, this is called white slip.
Applying glaze
Glaze is poured over the slip and the piece is fired.
Through these processes, the beauty of the contrasting shades, where the patterns appear to float, and a profound charm are created.
