Shoji Hamada is one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Japanese pottery. He traveled the world, establishing the "Mingei" movement, which connected daily life with art. He is the most famous Japanese ceramist. His simple yet powerful sugarcane motif (tokibi-mon) on square bottles, plates, and flattened jars is immensely popular both in Japan and abroad.

This Akae sake cup clearly shows the lines and circular patterns painted on top. The piece strongly evokes a sense of rhythm and playfulness in its design.
