This piece is by Kanjiro Kawai, a master who, along with other giants such as Muneyoshi Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, who represent the Japanese folk craft movement, and Kenkichi Tomimoto and Tatsuaki Kuroda, who represent modern Japanese crafts and whose names are still spoken of today, laid the foundation of the Japanese folk craft movement and was a central figure in its development. His style is characterized by a profound yet rustic aesthetic that pursues "beauty in utility," pioneering new frontiers in modern ceramics and earning international acclaim, including the Grand Prize at the Milan International Exhibition.
This work dates from the late Taisho to early Showa periods. It features a vibrant blue-green glaze, with a floral pattern painted on the body in a free-flowing brushwork style.
