This is a work by Shimizu Uichi, a world-renowned ceramist who studied Chinese pottery under Ishiguro Munemaro, a Living National Treasure in "Iron Glaze Pottery." After training at the Kyoto National Ceramic Testing Laboratory, he served as an assistant in the Ceramics Department at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Research. He then dedicated himself to ceramic art primarily at his home studio, and at the age of 59, he became the youngest person at the time to be designated a Living National Treasure for "Iron Glaze Pottery." In his later years, he moved his kiln to the foot of Mt. Horai on the west side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture and continued his active career.
