As a master of the potter's wheel, Manji studied under the 12th Kakiemon Sakaida, and with his exceptional skill and extensive experience, he has spearheaded Arita's white porcelain tradition. In Japanese ceramics, elements of chance, such as warping and kiln variations, are often embraced as part of a work's charm. However, with white porcelain, perfect execution is demanded, where even the slightest flaw is unacceptable, whether in form, pinholes, or impurities.
This is a masterpiece by Manji, who, in Arita, a region renowned for its traditional colored enamels like Akae and Nabeshima, has perfected the monochrome world of white porcelain. Patterns are carved into the moist, pure white surface, and the piece is finished with a soft green glaze.
