26426 KAWAI Kanjiro, Covered vessel with wax-resist green glaze (appraised by Toshitaka)

Height: 14.2cm
Diameter: 12.6cm

Kanjiro Kawai was a master who represented the Japanese Mingei (folk art) movement. He helped lay its foundations and played a central role alongside other legendary figures whose names are still celebrated today, such as Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, as well as modern Japanese craft icons like Kenkichi Tomimoto and Tatsuaki Kuroda. Known for his profound and unpretentious style that pursued the "beauty of utility," Kawai pioneered new frontiers in modern ceramics and earned global acclaim, including the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale.

This piece is a magnificent work characterized by the beautiful coloring of its deep green glaze. The wax-resist technique was used to delineate the design, resulting in patterns with a soft, bleeding effect.
