After graduating from Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School in 1966, he aspired to become a potter and studied under Tadashi Shimizu. In 1971, he completed the advanced course at the Kyoto Prefectural Institute of Ceramics and became an instructor at the same institution. He began his research into Tenmoku glazes at the Gojozaka communal climbing kiln, "Kaneikama," seeking not only to reproduce classical styles but also to explore his own unique expression. In 1977, he resigned from his instructor position to devote himself entirely to pottery, and in 1979, following the closure of "Kaneikama," he built a gas kiln at his home.

In 1988, he received tutelage from Uichi Shimizu at the training workshop for successors of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Iron Glazed Pottery" (Tetsuyu-toki).
