Born in Tokyo in 1913 as the eldest son of braided cord artisan Yoneichi Shimaoka, he graduated from the Ceramic Engineering Department of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and after enlisting and being discharged from the military, became a student of Shoji Hamada in Mashiko at the age of 27.

Tatsuzo Shimaoka is an artist who, after becoming independent at the age of 35 and until his death in 2007 at the age of 88, created numerous works in the field of folk crafts using his original technique called "Jomon inlay."

Since he initially used braided cords made by his father, Yoneichi, when using Jomon techniques, it can be imagined that his ideas were born from the environment in which Tatsuzo was raised.

1996 Tatsuzo Shimaoka designated as a holder of a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).

A leading Japanese ceramic artist who revered Shoji Hamada as his lifelong master and established the Jomon inlay technique, which applied the braided cords made by his father.
He also actively held solo exhibitions and lectures overseas, spreading folk craft pottery to the world.
