Born in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, on the east side of the Kamo River at Sanjo-dori. Real name Yasujiro Moto. He studied Japanese painting at a painting school, and later learned fine craftsmanship from Aoyama Harumitsu, a master of Utatsuyama ware, and pottery techniques from the first generation of Suizan. His pottery name “Shinko” is derived from Harumitsu.
In 1909 (Meiji 42), he was invited to Ine, Bizen City, and built a kiln at Futatsuzuka. The following year, he was already commissioned to produce Bizen ware for Emperor Meiji in Okayama Prefecture. Excelling in fine craftsmanship, his works were presented to various emperors and foreign dignitaries, and his entries won awards at numerous exhibitions. In 1942 (Showa 17), he was certified as an Art Preservationist.
