Shimizu Uichi studied Chinese ceramics under Ishiguro Munemaro, and then in 1970 moved his pottery studio (Horai Kiln) to the foothills of Mount Horai in Kosai, Shiga Prefecture. Making use of the soil of Mount Horai, he produced works such as Horaiji/Tetsuyo, and was recognized as a Living National Treasure in 1985 for his "Iron-glazed Pottery." While based on Chinese ceramics, this work was born from the artist's unique commitment to the soil and glaze, and is imbued with a sense of moisture that draws you in every time you look at it. In addition, the thick layer of celadon glaze, the gentle blue glaze color, and the crazing on the surface of the vessel are reminiscent of the Southern Song Dynasty official kiln "Golden Thread Iron Wire."
