Bernard Leach was a unique British potter who contributed to the development of the folk art movement along with Yanagi Muneyoshi, Tomimoto Kenkichi, and Hamada Shoji. He returned to England in 1920 and built a Japanese-style climbing kiln in St. Ives, Cornwall, and established the Leach Workshop in 1922, making it his lifelong base. His unique style is characterized by a fusion of Western pottery such as slipware with Eastern ceramic techniques.
