Kodo's greatest feature is his wide range of color expression. Originally, lacquer colors were limited to vermilion, black, yellow, green, and brown, but Kodo was one of the earliest adopters of the new lake pigment material, and produced works that made full use of difficult intermediate colors and vivid colored lacquer. He has significantly expanded the range of color expression with lacquer, and his innovative design sense continues to fascinate viewers. This work was created to commemorate the 90th birthday of Kodo (also known as Kyuuju, and said to come from the fact that the character for pigeon contains the number nine and is pronounced "kyuu"). Perhaps due to aging, the corners are slightly warped.
