After studying Chinese ceramics under Ishiguro Munemaro, he moved his pottery studio (Horai Kiln) to the foothills of Mount Horai in Kosai, Shiga Prefecture in 1970. Making use of the soil of Mount Horai, Shimizu Uichi produced works such as Horaiji/Tetsuyo, and was recognized as a Living National Treasure in 1985 for his "Iron-glazed Pottery." While based on Chinese ceramics, this work was born from the artist's unique commitment to the soil and glazes, and is reminiscent of a lake, with a moistness that draws you in every time you look at it. In addition, the thick layer of celadon glaze, with its gentle blue glaze color and crazing, is reminiscent of the Southern Song Dynasty official kiln of "Golden Thread Iron Wire."
