There is not a single cloud as far as the eye can see, and the round moon is shining. This is an analogy to the clouds clearing away to reveal the moon, describing the state in which a Zen monk's delusion turns into enlightenment as he practices zazen and attains zen absorption.



Shirasaki Hideo (May 25, 1920 - February 22, 1992) was a writer and art critic. He was born in Fukui City and graduated from Hosei University. In 1966, he won the Japan Essayist Club Award for "Genuineness." He broke new ground in biographical novels, and wrote many books related to antiques, calligraphy, Japanese painting, and seal carving. He is also known as the person who popularized Kitaoji Rosanjin. He was a keen critic of Rosanjin's artistic quality and technical uniqueness.
