Shimizu Uichi studied Chinese ceramics under Ishiguro Munemaro, and then moved his pottery studio (Horai Kiln) to the foothills of Mount Horai in Kosai, Shiga Prefecture in 1970. Making use of the soil of Mount Horai, he produced works such as Horaiji/Tetsuyo, and was recognized as a Living National Treasure in 1985 for his "Iron-glazed Pottery." While based on Chinese ceramics, this work was born from the artist's unique commitment to using clay and glazes, and is imbued with a sense of moisture that draws you in every time you look at it.
