With his rich sense of color and extraordinary sense of pottery, he established the technique of Nerijozu. He presented a modern, unique style of pottery based on traditional techniques, and with his Nerijozu, the great potter Matsui Yasunari has achieved many great feats, including being recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the country. This is a representative work from his final years, a Sui-ceramic Nerijo sake cup. It is characterized by its vivid colors like jewels or glass, and its transparent shine. His Sui-ceramic series specializes in flower motifs, and this sake cup also gives the impression of blue flowers blooming in abundance. Another characteristic of this period is that it was made in a large size. Professor Matsui's final years were spent battling illness, and only a limited number of his works remain.
