Ryozo Kawakita, a Living National Treasure, is a master of the technique of "woodturning," in which wood is shaped on a potter's wheel. He is known for his work that makes the most of the characteristics of each wood, such as keyaki (zelkova), mulberry, maple, and black persimmon, and is also involved in the restoration of the Shosoin Imperial Treasures. His style is truly characteristic of Ryozo Kawakita, making the most of the base material, and the beautiful grain of the wood stands out. The overwhelming finish, which is the result of the artist's advanced skill, is simply amazing. Kayano Oosugi is a giant cedar tree located in the grounds of Sugawara Shrine in Kayano-cho, Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is one of the four sacred trees at the shrine and is designated as a national natural monument. In 1947 (Showa 22), Emperor Showa stopped by during the second Ishikawa National Athletic Meet and carefully observed the tree, so it is also known as Tenran no Oosugi (the cedar seen by the emperor).
