After graduating from Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School in 1966, he aspired to become a potter and was taught by Shimizu Tadashi. In 1971, he completed the specialized course at the Kyoto Prefectural Potters' Training School and became an instructor there, where he began researching Tenmoku at the Gojozaka communal climbing kiln "Kanechugama," and sought his own form of expression in addition to reproducing classics. In 1977, he resigned from his position as an instructor at the training school to concentrate on pottery, and in 1979, when "Kanechugama" was closed, he built a gas kiln at his home. In 1988, he was taught by Shimizu Uichi at the Training Session for Successors of "Iron-glazed Pottery," an Important Intangible Cultural Property. *Major public collections include the Museum of Kyoto, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
